Do not pursue happiness

There is an interesting paradox in life.

On the one hand, it seems what everyone is seeking ultimately, is a sense of happiness.

While on the other, happiness is not simply a goal that we can just achieve.

For happiness doesn’t just descend upon us when we call for it. Reality is always crueler than what we wish it is. Oftentimes, our days are filled with agony and sorrow. Our nights are flooded with pain and anguish.

So, if we are too fixated on trying to be happy without acknowledging the sadness or any emotional distress in front of us, we end up cornering ourselves into a state of suffering. And in return, we ironically push ourselves even further from the happiness we desire.

But what we can do instead, is to aim to be graceful with the seasonality of life.

Be appreciative when difficulties emerge as they test the determination of our heart and strength of our spirit. And be grateful when happiness finally arrives even just for a split second and cherish every previous moment of it before it slips away in front of our very eyes.

More importantly, we should set a more meaningful goal that aligns with our true purpose in life – to develop our characters in the face of challenges and obstacles. A goal for us to learn to call forth our courage and wisdom in times of need and trust the power that resides within us to pierce through the shadow of life. To learn to confront our fears and dispense with our traumas and unhealthy behaviors that hinder our growth and freedom.

As a result of that, you build a moral fortitude to endure the sorrowful times without being corrupted or defeated by life’s hardships. And life itself has become a self-sustaining magnet that magically attracts the joy, happiness, and everything you desire.

For my friend, remember, the essence of any manifestation, is not about attracting what you want, but to become, who you are.
