What Are We Seeking

We are all wandering in this world searching for something. Everyone is.

Sometimes we know what we want. Sometime we don’t. And sometimes we think we know what we want.

But what is it, that thirsts us, that drives us, to chase some sort of desire or dream? What is this hunger to internally push us to seek the treasure so to speak, no matter if it’s a sense of significance, a career, a relationship, a moment of peace, or simply the answer to Who am I?

I don’t have a definitive answer for that. But what’s becoming clear to me over the years is that what most people’s deepest desire, regardless of its various names, is to find a sense of belonging, a feeling of being seen, being heard, being loved, and being completely safe.

Because that sense of belonging, that feeling of freedom, and that knowing that I will be ok no matter what happens, no matter who I am, no matter what I did, is a relief. For we can finally permit ourselves to put down our masks, letting the person we pretend to be disintegrate, and reconnect with our unbounded and innocent self, without fear of being judged or abandoned.

And it’s in that holy moment, we experience a glimpse of that which never dies, known as unconditional love.
