Are animals happier than human beings?
Perhaps we never know. But one thing certain is that animals seem to be easily content with just enjoying the present moment. Meanwhile, human beings are hardly satisfied with it.
As a matter of fact, we are more concerned with pleasant memories and future expectations — usually the latter.
As a result, we are even willing to tolerate a miserable present in an effort to secure some guarantee of an enjoyable future, which, frankly speaking, is not real.
For a future is only real when it becomes present. Yet when it actually happens, we simply begin worrying about the next “future”, like a hamster in a hamster wheel endlessly chasing the so-called dreams or a better tomorrow.
So then the million-dollar question is: how do we break this vicious cycle and start enjoying what we already have, without being anxious about the future or haunted by the past?
Well, the answer lies in the realization that what truly belongs to you at any moment is nothing but this minute and second. Any grasping beyond it is simply futile and meaningless. Memory is just snapshots of the past and the future is merely anticipations of the unknown.
So give yourself permission to just be. Take time to feel the warmth of the sun. Listen intently to the sound of blooming flowers. Follow each soft breath into relaxation and peace. And draw strength from every instant of joy and love in the stillness of the now.
Remember, true happiness does not mean abandoning tomorrow, but being present with every fleeting here and now.
